If there is one thing you can count on when visiting New York City, is that you will get more than a few good meals throughout your visit. The beauty of this city is that you don’t have to overspend or go out of your way to find good food. Between the hole-in-the-wall pizza joints, the Wall Street steakhouses and the eateries that would fall in the “in-between” category, NYC will not let you down! I was in New York City earlier this year. Twice, to be exact, within a one week span, but I’ll leave those details for another post. The myriad of food options at our disposal were plentiful and we took full advantage of that enjoying all that the city had to offer. If you are heading to the city any time soon, shall I suggest the following:
For breakfast:
maman – This breakfast hot spot seems small upon arrival with additional seating in the back. The pastries offer the type of comfort you desire in the morning while the coffee gives you the added jolt you need to get about your day. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious with the perfect balance of being hearty without being too filling. Choose a seat at the bar to people watch or pick a seat in the back for a cozy spot to enjoy that coffee.
Sant Ambroeus – The interior settings of Sant Ambroeus are picturesque. The service was remarkable and the brunch was equally impressive. What started in Milan in 1936 expanded to New York City in 1982 with their first location on Madison Avenue. I visited the Soho location that boasted dining tables draped with press tablecloths that played host to the litany of lattes, teas, pancakes, eggs and pastries that were consumed. Come for the photo op, stay for the experience.
For lunch:
Balthazar – This is one of my favorite lunch (and brunch) spots in the city. Balthazar is a bustling French brasserie restaurant in Soho known for offering an authentic Parisian-style atmosphere and classic French cuisine since its opening in 1997. The Beef Stroganoff is one of my favorite dishes, but you really cannot go wrong with any menu choice. If you still need convincing, they have an adjacent bakery that is top notch. Save room for dessert (and perhaps one to take to-go).
Nobu – This lunch option may be a bit predictable, but always spot on. This upscale sushi restaurant is known for its Japanese-Peruvian courses and overall experience. I prefer the location on 57th, but the downtown location also delivers on the food and the vibe. Whether you are looking to have a full meal or simply a quick bite before continuing your exploration of the city, you can’t go wrong with Nobu (fun fact: it is co-owned by Robert De Niro). I recommend making a reservation, but walk-in’s are always welcomed.
For dinner:
Harry’s – We were hosted for a steak dinner at Harry’s, a Wall Street institution for over 50 years. Their location is prime and the steaks are superior offering the type of atmosphere that can only be set in the basement of the historical India House building. Their Beef Wellington is a staple, but their Prime Tomahawk is a showstopper. If you are asking for a suggested accoutrement or two: the polenta fries and the sautéed garlic broccolini.
Manhatta – Perched 60 stories above the city, this downtown restaurant and bar offers a rotating menu of some of the most sought after dishes in the city. The view that accompanies the meal is just as desired. Opt for a reservation around sunset so you can enjoy a drink at the bar (pictured above) before the sun goes down.
Sushi of Gari 46 – This quaint sushi eatery is located blocks from Times Square in the Theater District. The entrance is a bit underwhelming with a less than pretentious vibe that most NYC restaurants strive for. However, they do not need the pomp and circumstance to deliver a fresh, authentic take on Japanese cuisine. The sushi is free of superfluous drizzles and textures that usually mask the flavor of the fish while the appetizers are made-to-order. The staff is genuine and attentive rounding out the overall dinner experience. I highly recommend you make a reservation during your next visit.
